Biography of Birt Elsworth Mitterling of Larimore ND

Birt Elsworth Mitterling, owner of Larimore Machine Works, was born in Indiana in 1874. With a background in mechanical training, he gained experience in machinist work and steam plant construction before establishing his own business in Larimore, North Dakota. He married Anna Frick in 1899, and they have a son named Ebin.


Birt Elsworth Mitterling, the proprietor of Larimore Machine Works, was born on September 24, 1874, in LaPorte, Indiana. His parents were Solomon C. Mitterling, a contractor of German descent, and Sarah Mitterling, of English ancestry. Birt received a limited education but embarked on a path of acquiring thorough mechanical training, gradually advancing in his career. He initially worked as a machinist for five years at the Sprague Company in Chicago. Afterward, he transitioned to the construction of steam plants for a period of two years. He then joined the Sullivan Machine Company, specializing in the construction of hoisting machinery until March 1896, when he relocated to Larimore, North Dakota, and established his own industry, Larimore Machine Works.

On June 3, 1899, in Chicago, Mr. Mitterling married Miss Anna Frick. They have a six-year-old son named Ebin.
